What to Wear

One of the questions most people ask me before trying Pilates is "What should I wear to my session?"

Clients should always wear tight clothing that allows their trainer to be able to see and correct their form. A long time ago I gave the cue "Make sure your ribcage is closed" to a client wearing a big bulky sweatshirt. She asked me "Is my ribcage closed?" Needless to say I had to inform her that I couldn't tell because of all the layers of clothing she was sporting.

I am partial to yoga bootleg pants or capris when doing Pilates. Tank tops and form fitted tees are also good. Since I basically live in my glorified pajamas I like to invest in good quality clothing that can stand up to my busy active lifestyle. I find that Hardtail and Lucy are great brands that can take a good beating and flatter any figure.

Pilates is usually done in either socks or bare feet. I prefer to go barefoot just so that I don't have to worry about slipping around on the mat or machines. Socks with grips on the bottom are a great alternative to barefeet. Toe Sox and Crescent Moon are gaining popularity.

  1. Hi, I'm a Pilates instructor and studio owner and am the designer of TheShu to wear during sessions. The sole is non skid, great especially when doing footwork on the Trapeze Table with the springs attached below, and standing leg slides etc.The body is made of lycra and is non restrictive, so its almost like going barefoot. I invite you to visit our site.

  3. Hi, I'm a pilates instructor and I contract through the District of Houston to teach classes in a Community hall. Often when I teach, I get cramping in my toes, especially during the side series. I wondered if it is because my feet are so cold. What do you think?

  4. You should try ActivewearUSA.com for Pilates clothing. They carry a fantastic range of Pilates clothing. As a Pilates instructor most of my outfits come from there.

  8. THis may seem silly but I have heard many friends new to pilates and yoga complain that when they wear the tight clothing they have to "suck in". FOr any of you out there, please just remember you are there to make yourelf more complete, a better and healthier you and pilates will do this inside and out. Thinking about your stomach may distract you from focusing on the body parts in use. Feel good about your body because you are a person who is seeking a better you through pilates (or yoga)... while I do not mean a better physique that isn't all that bad of an added bonus beyond a healthy self:)
